Hard Core Classical Ballet Technique

Classical ballet, within Western dance aesthetics, stands as sacred geometry does within Western architecture: a foundation of precision, balance, and ideal form. As the predominant canon of Western dance, ballet has undergone countless transformations in style and interpretation. Yet its underlying principles-  organisation, athleticism, and grace — continue, on an unconscious level, to shape our appreciation of dance and movement, even in the 21st century.

Today, classical ballet is no longer the dialectical “other” to modern, post-modern, or contemporary dance, but rather part of an ongoing conversation. Returning to its core reveals both its simplicity and its structural sophistication: a progressional methodology in which each exercise prepares the body and mind for the next, leaving nothing to chance.

In this class, we will revisit the foundations of the Vaganova method, exploring its logic, strength, and elegance. Drawing from my own early training and years of re-studying the technique, I offer a contemporary re-interpretation that emphasizes clarity, precision, and embodied understanding.

Whether you come from contemporary, jazz, or hip hop backgrounds, in sneakers or bare feet, this class offers a deep technical grounding to enhance coordination, strength, and expressive control (romanticism is welcome to those who desire).

As a bonus, you’ll build a harder core, both literally and metaphorically, and gain a richer understanding of the principles that continue to define Western dance aesthetics. Together, we will also look at the contradictions (and dance them full out) for a deeper aesthetics experience of the form.
